Study of Urban patterns - Versova Koliwada
(Teamwork: work here shows my contribution)

This Group project aimed at studying the development pattern of the native Koliwadas (fisherman communities) of Mumbai and the effects of rapid urbanization, surrounding redevelopment and shift of occupation in these Koliwadas. The study that I was a part of was conducted for Versova Koliwada which is one of the 27 Koli settlements of Mumbai. The study involved a group of ten architecture students wherein I was responsible for creating the figure ground of the community since its inception around 1600’s .

Planning Clusters

Apart from mapping, the study sought to comprehend the organic development and massing patterns of the housing clusters in these settlements, as well as how they established a distinct semblance despite being so diverse. These settlements do not adhere to any zoning laws and are a result of organic growth patterns, thus me and my teammates chose few of these unique clusters of the Koliwadas and created there plans sections and 3d visualizations. This helped us understand the types of uses that coexist in this setting and what type of construction materials, housing characteristics, and racial demographics apply in these clusters.

The graphic above depicts a cluster of permanent and semi-permanent houses composed of concrete and asbestos sheets. This cluster was usually found in the koliwada’s outskirts, along the creek, and housed a younger generation of settlers. As a result of such native community site studies, I learned a lot about the region’s developmental metamorphosis. These koliwadas are historic assets of thecity that must be protected from the housing boom that is sweeping over Mumbai. A suitability analysis should be undertaken to determine suitable solutions for these communities and to discover how we, as planners and designers, can promote local culture, retain native populations, and reinforce their original occupation through our work.
